One day last summer, a prominent magazine came to New York City to do a story on women who report business news on national TV. The women selected were Bonnie Behrend and Consuelo Mack from CNBC, Susie Gharib and Erika Miller from the "Nightly Business Report", and Susan McGinnis from "Marketwatch" on CBS.
The assignment went smoothly. The reporter interviewed each woman in her office and a photographer came to take a picture for use in the article. But this was no ordinary photographer. He was nationally known and one of the best in the field of portrait photography. When he took a picture, he managed to accentuate each woman's most beautiful feature. The camera used also had a digital camera attached so a copy of the picture was available instantly. Each of the reporters was so impressed that they requested 8x10 glossies to show their husbands.
On the final day of the assignment, the reporter arranged for a group interview at a posh hotel outside of the city. Each reporter wanted to make a very good impression, so they dressed extremely well. Bonnie Behrend wore a very nice black dress and matching pumps. Consuelo Mack wore a blue two-piece business suit with pumps, a gold necklace and an ornate pin. Susie Gharib wore a dark two-piece business suit, while Erika Miller wore a bright blue one. Both wore matching pumps. Susan McGinnis chose a conservative yellow suit and matching pumps.
After a well-done and insightful interview session, time came for a group picture to illustrate the article. The women went outside and stood by the hotel pool. The reason this hotel was chosen instantly became obvious. The view from the pool area took in a great view of the city skyline and this made the perfect backdrop for a dramatic photo.
The photographer started shooting pictures and the women thought the idea of being like models was fun. However, the fun soon faded as the photographer was arranging them in various orders for pictures. He tried arranging them in order of increasing height, decreasing height, increasing age, decreasing age, program affiliation, suit color, etc. The almost endless session and the heat of the summer afternoon were sapping the enthusiasm of the reporters. But, the photographer eventually got enough shots and announced that he had enough pictures to choose from.
The reporters were standing around and talking about their just-concluded "modeling" experience. As the conversation continued, Susie glanced at the pool. It looked very inviting and she thought that it might have been a good idea to bring a swimsuit that day so she could cool off in the pool. However, she realized that if she did that and the photographer snapped a shot, chances are it would leak out, get on the Internet, and she would be taken to task by her bosses and given a stern lecture about the need to preserve "journalistic credibility". So, she resigned herself, as did her friends to retreating to the air-conditioned confines of the hotel for some non-alcoholic drinks.
However, fate (in the form of a small visitor) was about to intervene. As the women were standing around and the photographer was inspecting his equipment prior to packing it up, a fairly large hornet appeared and seemed curious about the reporters. The women saw the hornet and tried frantically to shoo it away. A sting from a hornet of that size would be extremely unpleasant to anyone and downright fatal to someone who was allergic to insect venom, so there was quite a bit of concern. The hornet was not driven off and in fact seemed intrigued by the pin on Connie's outfit, so it flew in for a closer look.
Connie saw this and instinctively leaped back. However, there was only the pool behind her. Seeing her start to fall, Bonnie and Susan each grabbed one of Connie's arms to try to stop the fall. If those two were barefoot or wearing flats, it might just have worked. But their heels threw off their balance and they too started to topple. Erika and Susie quickly tried to intervene, but it was all in vain as every one of them fell into the pool. The hornet, scared by the splash, decided to fly over to the hotel garden.
Hitting the water, each of them felt refreshed as the perfect-temperature water instantly soaked through their outfits. They quickly surfaced, spitting water. The photographer, seeing what happened, ran over carrying his camera and bag asking if everyone was all right. Then, as he saw the women treading water in the pool, he pulled out his camera and prepared to take a picture. The reporters were dreading this - a shot of them swimming fully-clothed might be quite troublesome career-wise. As he was framing the shot, a strange expression appeared on the photographer's face. He then lowered his camera and camera bag as if to shield himself from something and ran away (in an odd manner).
Susan laughed and said "It's amazing! The man has undoubtedly photographed many models in his career and he has photographed women in swimsuits. Yet, here we are, by no means supermodels, and fully-clothed no less, and look what happened to him."
"True," replied Susie, "it is puzzling." Glancing down and seeing that her skirt rode up to near mini-skirt level, she continued "I show more skin when I'm on the tennis court and no one reacts like that".
Bonnie said "Let's find the ladder so we can climb out." Then she started swimming in the general direction of the ladder. Bonnie, who look downright sultry in her black dress on land, looked spectacular as she swam. Her blonde hair was slicked back, and her skirt swirled around, revealing generous portions of her legs.
Connie mentioned "Why don't we just stay in and enjoy the pool. After all, we can't get any more wet and hey, anything that enables a woman like me to have an effect like that on a guy has got to be fun."
The reporters concurred and decided to continue their impromptu swim party. The women paddled around, enjoying the way their outfits moved and how the rideup accentuated their legs. "This is great!" Susan exclaimed. "Very flattering, especially for someone with short legs like me."
"Yeah," replied Erika, "Too bad our husbands aren't here. They'd enjoy it!"
Susie shot back laughing "And we wouldn't get any sleep tonight!"
The women then decided to have a breath-holding contest. Susie naturally won, since she was the only athlete amongst them. The fun continued and Susie gave a few tips on improving their underwater swimming.
Feeling a little less inhibited. Erika decided to remove her jacket, revealing a nice black shell which just sufficiently concealed her black bra. However, none of others did likewise. They were afraid that if they did, some guy would come along and snap a picture of them.
They continued their activities, spending almost as much time underwater as they did on the surface. At one point the reporters even tried their hand at a little underwater ballet, even doing underwater handstands which caused their skirts to go to hip-level, completely revealing their lovely legs and a glimpse of their panties.
All things must come to an end and it was time to end the festivities. After diving down to retrieve their shoes (which slid off their feet early on) and Erika's jacket, the ladies exited the pool. This was a bit challenging as their hosiery-covered feet were a bit slippery on the ladder, but they made it out safely.
Since they obviously could not ride home in this state, something had to be done. Susie suggested that they visit the women's locker room and they all agreed. Once at the locker room, our heroines showered in their outfits to rinse off the chlorine, then they removed the suits and hung them to dry. Standing around in their soaked undies would seem conspicuous, so Bonnie located some towels to towel off and wrap around themselves. The exposed bra straps would look like those found on swimwear and not draw any attention. The women then sat around and socialized while their suits dried.
After their outfits dried, they changed back into them and did their best to get their hair into some kind of order. For Susie, this was a bit of a challenge since her the stuff she used in her hair had dissolved away in the pool. But they soon got themselves where they could pass muster and left.
This was a most interesting experience. And a rare one. Each of the women wondered when they would get to experience something like that again. But there is always hope.
