It was a hot humid morning in the summer when Dr. Emily Senay, health reporter for the CBS Early Show, arrived at the pool of a local country club to do a segment on pool safety. Emily was well-dressed in a smart red business suit with a knee-length skirt and a white blouse. The only people there besides Emily was the camera crew. This was exactly as planned, since visitors would only get in the way.
The crew started taping the segment. Emily then started her presentation. She discussed the importance of not going near a pool unless you are sober, use of non-slip surfaces in the pool area, proper chlorine levels, and other eminently practical advice. She did an extremely good job, especially since she was trying extremely hard not to look wilted from the near-stifling heat and humidity.
At the conclusion of the segment, the camera crew quickly packed up their gear and left to head back to their studio and air conditioning. Emily, who drove up in her own car, stuck around for a few minutes.
Just then, it happened. A blur of dark reddish orange appeared. It was a very large Irish Setter. The dog had evidently gotten away from its owner (as evidenced by the dragging leash) and had chased something. Seeing Emily and sensing that she was basically a friendly person, the dog quickly approached and jumped up in an attempt to greet her. However, all that was accomplished was that Emily was startled and the dog had pushed her right into the pool.
Emily fell in with a loud splash. Then the realization that she was in the water in her suit hit her. She promptly surfaced and was spitting and coughing out some water. Her blonde hair was plastered to her head, her jacket was bobbing. Bubbles from the splash mixed with those from the air escaping from her clothes. She then noticed that her skirt rode up to nearly mid-thigh level. While her legs were not spectacular, they were by no means ugly, but Emily quickly smoothed down her skirt since was she was somewhat modest.
Then, Emily glanced down at her blouse. The blouse had turned totally translucent and very clearly revealed her conservative bra. She then held her jacket closed, feeling a bit self-conscious.
A man soon appeared. He was not only the owner of the dog, but also owner of the club. He tied the dog to a nearby post and profusely apologized to Emily. She replied that she wasn't hurt, but she was not sure about her suit. The man then offered to pay her for either dry cleaning or replacing the outfit. "Here, let me help you out." he asked.
Reaching down to Emily, the dog owner managed to fake a fall into the pool. "Hey!" shouted Emily. "You fell in deliberately!"
The man replied "You got me. I just wanted to get in with you."
Emily quickly raised her hand and pointed to her ring. "Don't get any ideas! I'm married!" she shot back.
A bit disappointed, the man said "All right. But being in the water on a day like this is a relief. You ought to loosen up and enjoy it."
Emily said "What do you mean? True, the water feels nice, but we have our clothes on. I don't know about you, but my suit is probably ruined, and my blouse looks like something from a wet T-shirt contest."
"Hey, relax." the dog owner responded. "Lots of people do this. They actually enjoy the way their clothes move in the water. In fact, there is a group up in Canada called 'WetScape' which actually studies and promotes this stuff."
"Oh, really..." Emily asked. Upon thinking about it, the water did feel good and the way her stuff felt was a new and interesting sensation. She understood how people could actually enjoy this. Even if she got out right this minute, it wouldn't save her suit. So she figured that she might as well get some enjoyment out of her predicament. Emily then swam out a ways, but she had some difficulty since she was also trying to concentrate on keeping her jacket closed and her skirt from riding up too much.
Seeing her swimming, the man said "I see you need some work on your technique. I'll help." He then swam over to Emily. "First of all," he explained "lose the shoes. They only slow you down." With her friend steadying her, Emily reached down, removed her shoes, then tossed them onto the grass. "Also, I believe your jacket causing a bit of drag. For an experienced person, that's not a problem, but a beginner needs all the help they can get."
"Hey! Not so fast!" shouted Emily. My blouse went see-through on me, and I think I'd be a bit overexposed." Opening her jacket, she said "See?".
Looking things over, the dog owner ask Emily "Ever wore a two-piece swimsuit?" She replied that she did. "Well, what you have on under the blouse probably covers more than the top of one of those did. Plus, your translucent blouse blurs things a bit too. Heck, I've seen quite a few women show off much more than you would ever show." Feeling a bit more confident, Emily slid off her jacket and handed it to her new friend, who put it on the edge of the pool. "Now, how about a few lessons in the art of clothed swimming?"
"First, let's concentrate on simple swimming. Nothing fancy." the man commented. "The best strokes are those where your arms never leave the water. Out of the water, your sleeves slow things down. The breaststroke works best."
Emily tried it and she was moving better. However, she was concentrating on keeping her skirt under some measure of control, so that slowed her down a bit.
Seeing this, her friend said "Don't worry about it. Remember what I said before about swimsuits? Even with an occasional glimpse of your panties, you are still far more modest than most people in swimsuits."
"What the hell..." Emily thought and ignored the ride-up. Her swimming improved and she was beginning to enjoy it.
"Now, try floating on your back." the man said. Emily then flipped onto her back. It took a little effort to find the right balance as her clothes threw things off a bit. "That's good! Try a simple backstroke." With a gentle paddling of her arms and kicking her legs, Emily moved across the pool. The perspective of the backstroke allowed her to watch how her skirt moved around her legs. Seeing them like this, she noticed they looked rather nice.
"Very good!" exclaimed her friend. "Let's see how long you can hold your breath." Emily then put her face under and was able to hold her breath for about 45 seconds. The man then taught her a few little tricks, and soon she could hold it for well over a minute or so.
Next on the agenda was how to swim underwater without the benefit of any fins, masks, or other aids. Emily and her friend were having a good time, swimming along the bottom and doing simple underwater acrobatics.
As Emily was on the surface, draining out water that went up her nose and catching her breath, she said "Funny, isn't it? For someone who works on a ship occasionally, this is the most aquatic activity I've done in years."
"You work on a ship?" the man asked.
"In a way. I work on something in New York called 'The Floating Hospital' and it is on a ship."
"I see..." the man responded. "But that type of work doesn't allow much contact with the water. Just as well, since the water your ship is on is nasty."
"True," Emily replied. "but even when I came here today, I had no intention of swimming. All I was going to do was tell people how to be safe around pools..."
"And now," the man added, "you learned a whole new aspect of water safety. That's what the people at WetScape stress. Even if you don't do anymore of this in future, though that would be a shame, it is useful to know in case you accidentally wind up in the water somehow."
"You're right." Emily commented. Still, I don't see why people find this so fascinating. While it does feel nice, it seems so strange."
"Well, there is the beauty-enhancing aspect. If you wore a swimsuit, you might get some attention..."
"Even with my average figure?" Emily interjected.
"As I was saying, but in your clothes, there are other elements at work. Buoyancy can be, shall we say, enhancing to certain aspects of the figure. Also, there's the see-through aspect, so you are showing some skin and not showing skin at the same time. Then, there is the tease of the ride-up. It is very enjoyable to watch, and it makes you rather tempting to me, though I am restraining myself."
"That's good." Emily stated. "I'll just fool around in the pool for a while longer, then I'll get out."
"Okay. While you are doing that, I'll get some towels and unlock the changing rooms. You will have to shower to rinse off the chlorine. Then we'll see how badly your suit is damaged. I have a feeling the damage may not be as bad as you think."
"What about your clothes?" Emily asked.
"All washable. I do this quite frequently, so I know what works and what doesn't." With that, he swam to the ladder and exited the pool.
Emily then swam towards the ladder. By this time, her friend had unlocked the locker room and returned with towels. Helping Emily out, he noted the way the water streamed off her suit and how it clung tightly to her. Emily also noticed and, at first, felt a little self-conscious. But, the experience was fun and she lightened up as she took the towel.
"Now, you should go straight to the shower and rinse off the chlorine." the man explained. He also told Emily how to hang up her stuff so it would dry properly. He added "I also left a robe you could wear while waiting for your stuff to dry."
Emily then went into the locker room and showered. It felt odd showering in a suit, but today was an unusual day. As she was showering, Emily removed her suit. Changing into a robe, she hung her wet clothes to dry as she was instructed. "Ah, now some peace and quiet..." she thought as she found a place to sit and relax in the air-conditioned comfort of the locker room.
Soon, her clothes were dry and she changed back into them. Exiting the locker room, her friend greeted her and gave her a once over. "Just as I thought. Your suit appears to have survived unscathed. You can go anywhere now and no one will be the wiser."
Relieved, Emily responded "Well, it has been a new experience for me today. Who would have thought I would have learned about a whole new aspect of in the water activity today? Thanks for letting me rinse off and for saving my suit."
Her friend replied "I should thank you! While I do this type of swimming often, it is very seldom that I am able to do it with an attractive, well-dressed woman." Seeing that Emily was giving him a certain look, he continued "Of course, I remember you told me you were married, but I still enjoyed your company nonetheless. Perhaps I might see you again someday."
Smiling, Emily told him "If we do, make sure of one thing: that your dog is secured. I don't like being jumped on..."
"Will do!"
Saying her goodbye, Emily returned to her car and drove off. As she was driving, she thought about the events of the day. While it was a fun new experience, she doubted that she would make a habit of clothed swimming. She was too busy and had too few opportunities. Besides, some people might find the idea of a swimming doctor too hard to accept. But, on the upside, she reasoned, what she learned today would make her far more confident around water and, in the unlikely event she accidentally got into the water, she could handle herself and stay out of trouble.
All in all, this day turned out to be far more interesting than Emily expected.
