Four Become Wet
"So, what do you think of the place? Fantastic, isn't it?"
Mel C couldn't help grinning as she finished showing the other Spice Girls around her new house. She had fallen in love with the place the first time she saw it, and although it had been expensive, she knew she had made the right decision. Now that the others had seen all the rooms, the kitchen, the lounge, the three bedrooms, even the two bathrooms, they agreed that it was indeed a fabulous house, and that seemed to be that, until Mel remembered something. "Ooh, hang on, I haven't shown you the pool yet!"
Emma's eyes lit up. "There's a pool as well?"
"Yeah," Mel confirmed, "it's outside." With a dramatic swish, she opened the patio doors and led the girls out into the garden, the centrepiece of which was a huge swimming pool, with a few chairs and sun loungers placed casually around it. The sunlight sparkled on the perfectly still, crystal clear water. "It's gorgeous," Victoria declared.
Emma and Mel B agreed. "Why don't we stay out here a while?" suggested Mel C. "Make yourselves at home, I'll bring that champagne out." As she disappeared back inside, the others settled down on the sun loungers and lay back to enjoy the sunshine.
Presently, Mel C returned, now sporting a pair of sunglasses, and carrying a bottle of champagne and four glasses on a tray. "Wake up, girls, drink's here!" she laughed. Placing the tray on a poolside table, she removed the cork from the bottle with little effort and the minimum of spillage, and began to fill the glasses. The other girls gathered round to collect their drinks, and returned to their sun loungers. Mel helped herself to a glass and sat herself down on the concrete around the edge of the pool. Sipping on the champagne, she gazed at the inviting blue water. She had always wanted her own private swimming pool, and an unusually hot day like this was the perfect opportunity to try it out for the first time. Unfortunately, as she was still in the process of moving house, she didn't have a swimsuit to change into.
She sighed a little, put her glass down, and dipped her hand into the water. It felt beautifully cool, but it only increased her desire to submerge herself in it. She briefly thought of just going skinny-dipping, but quickly rejected the idea - there could be a photographer hiding behind any of those bushes. She took another sip of champagne. The water continued to call to her.
Suddenly, Mel drained her glass and rose from her position at the edge of the pool. "I can't sit here looking at it any longer," she announced. "I'm going in."
The others looked on open-mouthed as Mel walked to the ladder and began climbing the steps to the top diving board. "What are you doing?" squealed Emma. "You've got all your clothes on!"
"It's my pool," Mel called down as she reached the board. "If I want to swim in it fully clothed, then I'll do so!" A grin spread across her face as she walked to the end of the board. She thought for a moment about removing her sunglasses, but decided that as she was still wearing her yellow T-shirt, jeans, white socks and grey and white trainers, there wasn't much point, so she simply perched herself on the edge of the board, and after a final downward glance, dove in.
The rush she felt as the cool water immediately soaked through her clothes was like nothing Mel had ever experienced before. She surfaced, gasping with excitement, and swam back to the shallow end where the others were watching. The other Mel walked over to the edge of the pool to meet her. "How's the water?" she asked, with a grin.
"Perfect," grinned the soaking wet Mel. She stood up, slicked back her wet hair and placed her sunglasses on top of her head. Then, as another idea struck her, she reached out to Mel B. "Here, help me out," she requested.
Emma and Victoria could see exactly what was going to happen, but stifled their giggles and just watched as Mel B obligingly grabbed Mel C by the hands and attempted to pull her out. Before she could get a proper grip, however, Mel C gave a sharp tug and succeeded in pulling a screaming Scary Spice into the pool with her.
At first Mel B was furious, but as she surfaced in her drenched leopard-skin print crop top, brown combat trousers and boots, she couldn't help but laugh. "I can't believe I fell for the oldest trick in the book," she chortled.
"Me neither!" giggled Mel C, covering her face defensively as Mel B began to splash her. She started splashing back, at which point a full scale mock fight broke out, the two Mels ducking each other, splashing around and having a great time.
After a couple of minutes of this, Emma could no longer resist it. "Why should you two have all the fun?" she asked, walking over to the pool edge. Her heart pounding at the recklessness of entering the pool fully clothed, she turned around and stepped onto the first rung of the ladder.
At first the liquid merely lapped around the bottom of her blue platform trainers, but as she descended to the next step, the water engulfed her shoes and socks. One step further and it began to tug at the hem of her short black skirt, pulling it to and fro as the two Mels continued to splash each other. There was no going back now, she thought. With a further step, she found herself on the bottom rung of the ladder, where the waist deep water totally submerged her skirt and the bottom half of her blue denim shirt. She let out a squeal of pure excitement and let go of the ladder, allowing herself to fall backwards and become totally immersed.
Emma swam underwater for a while, revelling in the feeling of her loose-fitting shirt and skirt floating around her. Coming up for air, she marvelled at how the sodden denim clung to her now that it was out of the water. She continued to tread water for a minute or two, then Mel C let out a cry. "Hey, Victoria's still dry!"
Victoria was still sitting on a sun lounger at the side of the pool. "Too right I am!" she replied, looking down at her black minidress. "I have no intention of getting this dress wet, thank you very much."
The other three exchanged knowing glances. The gauntlet had been thrown down - they had to get Victoria in the pool too.
Emma decided to use a bit of gentle persuasion. "But it's so hot today," she began. "It's lovely and cool in here..."
"No."
"Right!" declared Mel B. She planted her feet firmly on the bottom of the pool and began to wade over to the edge - she would have liked to have marched over, for added emphasis, but the amount of air trapped in her baggy combat trousers made moving through the water quite a struggle. "Victoria Adams, you get in this swimming pool right now!" she demanded.
Victoria stuck out her tongue. "Shan't!" she taunted.
Mel B gestured the others to join her at the edge of the pool, and they waded over obligingly. "Well, if Victoria won't come in the pool," she said with a grin, "then the pool will have to come to Victoria!" With that, she dipped her hands under the surface and began splashing water in the direction of Victoria's sun lounger. Mel C and Emma quickly joined in, and Victoria screamed and leapt to her feet as she suddenly found herself underneath a torrent of water.
"Stop it!" she yelled, running to a safe distance and brushing the water from her dress. "You'll ruin it! This dress cost a fortune, you know!"
"Oh, like you can't afford to buy another!" laughed Mel C. "Anyway, it's wet now, are you coming in or do we have to drag you in?"
Victoria sighed. "Oh, what the hell." She sat down on the edge of the pool and began to undo her high-heeled sandals.
"Uh-uh-uh, shoes and all," Mel C admonished her. "It's my pool," she added, waving away Victoria's protests.
With another sigh, Victoria swung her legs around and into the pool, instantly soaking her shoes and wetting her bare legs almost to knee level. Planting her hands firmly on the concrete, she eased herself gently into the pool, gasping as the cool water crept up her legs, over her waist and eventually up to her chest. By the time her shoes touched the bottom, her low cut dress was now totally underwater, except for the shoulder straps, and despite her initial misgivings, Victoria couldn't believe how good it felt. "There, happy now?"
"Yeah, that's much better," grinned Mel C. "Right, let's have a race! Last one to the other end..."
"...pays the dry cleaning bills?" laughed Mel B.
Mel C chuckled. "You're on!" she agreed. "Ready, steady. go!" She started swimming at a furious pace, closely pursued by Mel B, until the air trapped in her trousers slowed her down and allowed Emma to overtake her by the halfway point. Victoria, meanwhile, was going nowhere, as her dress was too tight to allow her to work up a proper kicking motion. Mel C made it to the other side a fraction before Emma, with Mel B arriving a few seconds later. By this point, Victoria had given up trying to swim and had resorted to wading.
"Hopeless!" giggled Mel B. "You lose!"
"It's not my fault," Victoria grumbled. "I can barely walk in this dress, never mind swim in it!"
The girls eased themselves out of the pool and sat on the edge, wet hair plastered to their heads, water pouring from their shiny, drenched clothes which now clung to every inch of their bodies. "What do we look like?" giggled Emma. "Wet Spice, Soaking Spice, Drenched Spice and Dripping Spice!"
Everyone laughed. "It was fun though, wasn't it?" said Mel C. "And you all thought I was mental!" She looked at her hands. "We should probably go inside and get dry now, though. My hands are all wrinkled."
"You're right, " agreed Emma. "Although... I wouldn't mind a go on that top diving board..."
Mel C couldn't help grinning as she finished showing the other Spice Girls around her new house.
