Katie and the Tide
A Today Show story starring Katie Couric

It was the summer of 1999, quite some time since the loss of her husband and Katie Couric decided that it might be a good idea to start seeing men. Nothing serious or intimate (at least for now), but just for a little companionship and someone to have some good clean innocent fun with. But finding the right man...
The "Today" show was doing one of their sweeps stunts and doing a whole week of shows from a beachfront hotel in a coastal resort area of the US. On Thursday, after the taping, a man walked up and introduced himself to Katie. His name was Bill and he worked at the hotel. The two hit it off quickly and the next thing you know, the new twosome were having lunch in a nearby restaurant.
After lunch, Anthony suggested a stroll along the beach. Katie, still dressed in her business suit from the taping, thought it would be a bit odd strolling along the shore so well dressed, but she figured that nothing would happen.
Bill and Katie then walked along the beach, Bill walking between Katie and the surfline some feet away. They got into a pleasant, friendly conversation and continued down the beach. A few miles (and about an hour and a half passed) when they stopped to look out over the ocean. Finding a large rock, they both sat down and continued their discussion about likes, dislikes, and backgrounds.
After quite some time (though it did not seem so long to them) the duo decided to head back and get some dinner. But there was a problem.
"Look." Bill pointed out. "The tide has come in and that beach we were walking on is now submerged. We're dry here since this part of the beach is much higher than the rest."
"I guess we'll have to wait for the tide to go out. Any idea when that will be?" Katie asked.
Bill looked at his sports watch and said "Well, it is still coming in for about another hour or so. Then it will take at least four hours to go down enough. Should be some time late tonight."
This was a problem. Katie had to be back to the hotel before that to get some sleep before she had to get up in the predawn to get ready for tomorrow's taping. If she waited for the tide to go out, she might just arrive back just before she had to get up. "If only I was wearing my swimsuit..." Katie thought. But she was still in her business suit and she did not even pack a swimsuit for the trip.
"That's going to be a problem." Katie pointed out. "In case you don't remember, I have to get up at three in the morning to get ready for the taping. There has to be something we can do. Is there another way to get back?"
"Well," Bill replied, "There are two. One involves climbing up those rocks over there, but I see you aren't dressed for rock climbing, so that's pretty much out. Or we could walk further down the beach, about three miles, then walk inland until we get to the road and walk back to the hotel. But that will take almost as long as waiting for the tide. Of course, we could always find a nice spot and get some sleep while we wait for the tide to go out."
"Too bad about the alternate routes. Your other suggestion has problems too. What if we oversleep? I can't afford to get back late. Maybe I could wade across. I'm not wearing pantyhose today and, if I hiked my skirt up..."
"While I would love to see you try, unless you could hike it up past your navel, there is no way you'll keep it dry, especially with the waves." Bill answered.
"I guess that means we're stuck then," Katie commented.
"Wait!" Bill exclaimed. "I have an idea that just might get us back in plenty of time."
"What?" asked Katie.
"Well, I recalled reading in this book one time that, a long time ago in Europe, there were these people who functioned as human ferries at deep river fords. They would carry people across. Now, if you don't mind the idea of sitting on my shoulders, I could carry you until we got to dry land. With the waves and stuff, your feet will get wet, but as you said earlier, that wouldn't be a problem."
"But you'll get soaked." Katie mentioned.
"True, but what I have on can take water better than that grey business suit you have on. Want to give it a try?"
Sensing that this was the only solution with a chance of working, Katie agreed. After an awkward moment or two, Katie was seated on Bill's shoulders. Because of the way she was sitting, Katie's above-the-knee skirt rode up to almost micro-mini level, revealing lots of leg. With her shoes in the pockets of her jacket, Katie and Bill started on their trip.
After a few steps, the water was up to the knees of Bill's dockers. The waves would splash about midway up his thighs. Before long, Bill was in up to his waist and the waves were hitting Katie's feet. "My, the water is nice and warm" Katie thought. "Wish I had brought a swimsuit."
At about the midpoint, the water was past Bill's navel, soaking the lower part of his polo shirt. Every now and then, a wave would reach his chest. Katie's feet were now submerged and the lower portion of her legs were wet from the waves. Still, her outfit was dry, just as planned.
However, trouble was brewing. While no one would call Katie Couric fat, she was a tiny bit on the muscular side and, as a result, she wasn't as light as she looked. This weight was tiring Bill a little and made him a bit topheavy. To compensate, Bill was working extra hard to maintain his footing on the sand bottom. But, a tiny bit of rock was exposed on the bottom and Bill was walking towards it, totally unaware.
If Bill had been wading alone, the rock would have had no effect. He would have simply been able to recover almost instantly when he bumped the rock. But, with Katie's weight affecting his balance, that was not to be. Bill stumbled, attempted to recover, but fell over backwards as Katie screamed, sending them both into the water.
Almost instantly, they surfaced. Katie's hair was slicked back, her suit jacket was at least a shade darker and was clinging tightly, her blouse had gone somewhat translucent, and her skirt was bobbing at about miniskirt level. Katie was just about to start swearing at Bill, but then she caught herself. It wasn't Bill's fault. It was just a stupid accident and all the swearing in the world couldn't undo it.
Bill asked Katie "Are you all right? Just wait a second and I'll get you and finish carrying you across."
"What's the point?" Katie asked. "We're wet already, so we might as well swim. Just a second..." Katie quickly inspected her pockets. "My shoes! They're gone!"
Bill responded "Don't worry, I don't think they went far. True, they're probably ruined, but we shouldn't litter the beach anyway." With that, Bill scanned the area and went under when he saw something promising. He surfaced with one of Katie's shoes. Tightly attaching the shoe to his belt, he dove down to search for the other one, with Katie close behind.
As he was underwater searching for Katie's lost shoe, Bill noticed how nice and clear the water was. Excellent visibility. And the view was spectacular. Underwater, Katie's jacket moved like a cape. Her skirt now revealed almost all of her powerful legs and even a brief, fraction of a second, flash of her panties every now and then. Even Katie's short hair streamed behind her.
After about two such dives, Katie found the lost shoe and it was just as ruined by the seawater as the other. As Bill was securing the shoe to his belt, Katie commented "I have this odd feeling that you were looking at me down there more than you were looking for that shoe."
"I was a bit. But, with the way you looked under there, who wouldn't. You were incredible!"
"Really?" Katie was certainly glad that she wore a bra today or Bill would have really gotten an eyeful. Then, she had a thought. Here she was in the ocean, her suit might be ruined, and her shoes definitely were. Logically, she should be quite upset, yet Katie felt that this was fun - the most fun she had since the loss of her husband. Maybe this was a sign from above, an indication that it was time to start having fun again. Even if it meant that her suit and shoes were goners, the sensation of actually having a good time again was well worth it.
Katie then said "Now that we got those shoes off the bottom, let's have some fun!" and quickly slipped under the water. Bill dove in right after her. After a quick aquabatic session, they surfaced and began swimming in the direction of the hotel. As they approached a section of beach some distance from the hotel area, Bill turned and swam towards shore, saying "Hey, we can land here and walk the rest of the way."
Katie splashed Bill and commented "Nah, it's much more fun to go this way." She then continued to swim parallel to the beach. Seeing Katie's logic and also the fact that she was enjoying herself, Bill followed.
Eventually, Katie and Bill decided to head for shore. As they were wading in the surf, Bill asked "Why don't we do one of those 'rolls in the surf' like you see in the movies?"
Katie replied "If we did that, I'd be spending all night just removing the sand. Nice thought though."
Somehow, though it took lots of sneaking around, Bill managed to help get Katie back to the hotel without anyone noticing her. After Bill left, Katie took a shower in her suit to rinse the salt off. After hanging the suit to dry in the hopes it could be salvaged, Katie tossed her ruined shoes in the garbage, changed into dry clothes and had dinner. As she went to bed that night, Katie thought back on the day's experience. Too bad she never discovered how fun that type of thing was.
The next morning, Katie got up and gave her suit a once over. It wasn't too badly damaged, but she probably couldn't wear it under the close scrutiny of TV cameras again. More detailed inspection would have to wait. After a quick breakfast, Katie went to work on the show. Since today was Friday, it would be the last show of the week and she would have the weekend free.
After taping, Katie contacted Bill and suggested that they have lunch on a secluded spot on the beach. She also told him to prepare to go for a swim too. After all, they had so much fun yesterday in the water, Katie thought it would be fun to do it again.
After talking with Bill, Katie started to wonder what to wear for her swim. The outfit she had on currently was out of the question. Wrecking one suit in the ocean was one thing, but to do ruin another one in the same weekend would draw suspicion when she got home. Her daughters weren't stupid and had been looking out for her since her husband's death.
Katie figured that she could stop in the local clothing store and find a swimsuit and swimsuit coverup (being a newswoman, Katie didn't want to show that much skin in a public setting). Once in the store, it turned out that this wasn't going to be so simple. Coverups were in stock, but the swimsuit selection looked picked over. However, there were a few that were Katie's size. But a quick glance at the price tags revealed a problem - the suits were going for at least twice what they would have gone for at a shop further inland. And one thing Katie did not like was being gouged. But, she had a date with Bill on the beach and it looked like she would have to bite the bullet and purchase one of the suits. But, another solution was about to occur.
The store had a TV set, evidently more for the benefit of the employees than for any business purpose. When Katie glanced up at it, she noticed a commercial where underwater models, apparently in bikinis, were cavorting around with fabric and doing fancy maneuvers. She wondered what they were plugging. Could it be a resort, swimwear, or some product that just wanted a real artsy looking ad. Then, at the end of the ad, the answer was revealed. It was an ad shot by the world-famous underwater photographer Howard Schatz for a lingerie company. As she was thinking on how much the garments in the ad resembled swimwear, Katie had an idea.
Walking over to another section of the store, Katie found that they carried the particular brand and type of garments featured in the ad. And they were on sale - and cheaper than the swimwear to boot. Looking at the selection, Katie picked out a red sports bra and brief set which she thought would work and not be too revealing. Then she went and got a coverup. After paying for the items, Katie returned to the hotel.
Glancing at the clock, she saw that she didn't have too much time, so she got ready to go. After changing out of her clothes from the taping, Katie went and put on the undergarments she had just purchased. Looking at herself in the mirror, she was quite pleased with how they looked. No one could tell that it wasn't swimwear. Then Katie looked at her suit from yesterday. Despite her best efforts, some sand - evidently when she fell from Bill's shoulders - had gotten inside the linings. Figuring that she ought to wear the suit at least once more before tossing it, Katie put it on, took the bag with the coverup, and headed for the beach.
When Katie arrived, Bill was already on the beach wearing conservative black swim trunks. "Glad you could make it! I have lunch right here!" he exclaimed.
Katie and Bill then sat on some rocks and had their lunch. When they were done, Bill got up and walked into the water. "Are you going to join me?" he asked.
"Of course!" replied Katie as she ran into the water to meet Bill.
"I see you are in your suit from yesterday. Couldn't find any swimsuits?" asked Bill.
"Well, our swim yesterday ruined it, it's full of sand, so I figure have some more fun before I get rid of it." Katie answered.
After swimming for a while, Katie asked Bill "This suit is getting a bit heavy. Do you mind if I..."
Bill, with a somewhat excited expression, replied "Go right ahead!" With that, Katie went under and began stripping off her business suit. First, she removed her jacket. Then she quickly undid her blouse, followed by her skirt, leaving her in just the bra and panty set. All the while, a very ecstatic Bill was picking up Katie's discarded items, lest they litter the place.
Surfacing, Bill exclaimed "You clever little... You did find a swimsuit! And it looks great!" Before Katie could answer, Bill quickly went ashore and put the clothing on some rocks. Then he returned to the water and swam back to Katie.
When Bill arrived Katie commented "Bill, I have a confession. It's not really a bikini. It's underwear."
An astounded Bill said "Amazing! It looks just like a bikini, but when you told me that it was your underwear, you looked even sexier though nothing had changed. Incredible!"
"I suppose it's the 'naughtiness' angle to it." Katie replied "Enough with the analysis. Let's play!" With that, the two swam out a bit further and were having a wonderful time.
Bill asked "Since it's just us out here, I was wondering if we could... uh... you know...?"
Katie answered "Bill, I think it might actually be fun, but I don't think it would be a good idea. What if someone comes by on a boat or strolls by on the beach? I'm sorry."
"That's okay. I understand."
After some more aquatic fun and frolic, Katie and Bill came ashore. Once they were towelled off and had dried somewhat, Katie tossed her business suit into a plastic bag and put on the coverup while Bill got the freezer chest which held their lunch.
Walking back together on the beach, Katie said "I'd like to spend the weekend here, but the network says we have to check out tomorrow since they will only pay for the hotel till then."
"Don't worry," Bill replied, "I know a nice little place where you can stay. It may not be fancy, but the service is very friendly and it is very cheap."
"Where is this?" Katie asked, though she sort of knew the answer already.
"Some establishment called 'My Place'. I'd love to have you stay over."
"And I would love to!" answered Katie.
That weekend was the first really fun weekend Katie had in months. When she returned to New York, she was in a great mood and wondering when she would have another aquatic adventure.

Epilogue
Sadly, the relationship between Katie and Bill didn't last. While Bill was a nice enough guy and was really good, he came up short in one important (to Katie, that is) matter - his financial status. However, Katie soon found a big TV production mogul on the west coast and that man became her current (as of 2002) boyfriend.
