Note to readers: This, as well as the other "Stargate" stories are in response to a request by noted aquatic artist Troy Tempest.
It was several months after the events chronicled in Janet's House Call. The mining agreement was running smoothly and both sides were satisfied. Today was more quiet than usual at SGC Headquarters in Cheyenne Mountain. There were no SG teams off-world. As for SG-1, O'Neill was on leave in Minnesota, Tea'lc was at the Pentagon giving a briefing on the status of the Jaffa rebellion against the Goau'ld, and Daniel Jackson was in Peru studying some ruins.
Things weren't totally quiet though. General Hammond had scheduled a meeting with Dr. Frasier (who was essentially Earth's representative when it came to dealing with the islanders) to discuss how to reward the islanders for living up to the mining agreement. At the appointed time, Dr. Frasier arrived at the meeting room, as did Major Carter. They went in and sat at the table with General Hammond.
"You have to admit," said Hammond, "that these islanders have been the most pleasant people we have ever dealt with. No problems at all. I think we should reward them. Maybe some technology."
"Well, they have little need for technology and even less interest," stated Frasier, "but I have identified two areas where we could help them."
"And they are..." asked Hammond.
"Communications and sanitation." replied Frasier.
"Sir," Carter chimed in, "I believe that I can ask the Tok'ra if they can spare some of their waste disposal technology. It would be better for the environment if we did that rather than try to set up a system like ones we use."
"Sounds like a good idea," replied Hammond. "But, can someone tell me why they would need communications technology? It's not like they have electricity..."
"I wasn't talking about communications amongst themselves, Sir," explained Frasier, "but rather a means to communicate with us. The way things are now, if they wanted to get in touch with us, they would have to activate the gate and toss a seashell through. The shell would smash against the iris, we would detect the calcium residue. Then, we would open the iris and send someone through. If all they wanted to do was ask a question, it would be quite a hassle for them and us."
"What are you suggesting, Doctor, that we give them a GDO and a radio like an SG team? I don't think so. We can't risk a GDO falling into the wrong hands." stated Hammond.
"Sir," Carter explained, "There is no need for a GDO. The MALPs don't have GDOs and we can get telemetry from them."
"What are you driving at, Major?"
"We have a couple of wrecked MALPs in storage, some with working communications systems. I think we can remove the communications gear from one of them, set it up on the planet and have the natives use that to talk to us."
"I think that could work. Good idea, Major."
"Sir," Carter continued, "we're going to need to build a shelter for the system, as well as a way to charge the batteries. MALP components are not designed for permanent outdoor function."
"Get what you need." answered Hammond. "One more thing... should I have SG-4 come with you to help."
"That's not necessary, General." Carter replied. "We should be able to get help from the village."
"That settles it then. Dismissed."
Two days later, things were ready to go. The communications gear, batteries, solar panels (for charging the batteries), as well as materials for a shed were packed onto a cargo hauler. Major Carter and Dr. Frasier were also in the gate room. Each was wearing a black T-shirt, fatigue pants, and combat boots. They also had backpacks containing what they needed for a couple days' stay on the planet.
"Good luck!" said General Hammond. He then gave the order to activate the gate. The gate went into action and the wormhole formed. Once that happened, Carter, Frasier, and the hauler went through the gate.
They promptly appeared on the planet. The weather was quite warm, even warmer than it was when SG-1 first visited this world. Samantha Carter said "I'll be back in a minute." and ducked behind some of the local trees. Janet Frasier wondered what she was up to, but she quickly returned. At first glance, Janet noticed nothing different, but then she saw that Sam's fatigue pants looked a bit worn and her boots looked beat-up.
"Sam," Janet asked, "what's with the change?"
"Well," Sam answered, "these are some things that got a bit ruined on an earlier mission. Since we are going to be doing a lot of heavy work, I figured I could use these as work clothes."
As the discussion ended, Chief Ameha of the islanders appeared. "When I heard that gate thing, I knew you were coming." he said as he greeted Janet with a warm embrace.
"Wow!" added Sam, "Seems you made some friends when you were here, Janet."
Ignoring the comment, Janet mentioned "You remember Major Samantha Carter from the first visit."
Turning to Sam, Ameha answered "Yes, and I am glad we are meeting under more pleasant circumstances. By the way, why have you paid a visit today?"
Sam replied "I'll field that question. We are going to set up a system that will allow you to talk to us on Earth any time you want. All the stuff on that thing with the wheels is what we're going to build."
Ameha commented "Nice. But, I think you two can use some help. I am a bit busy, but I will send Anno. He's quite reliable. See you two later." Then Ameha walked back to the village.
As the two women were unloading the cargo hauler, Anno (one of the islanders) showed up. After a brief introduction, the trio got down to work.
Anno proved to be a quick study, and soon learned enough basic techniques to be a major help. He was impressed by the metal tools and fasteners being used and asked many questions about them. But shiny metal wasn't the only thing he was impressed by. It was soon apparent that he was smitten with Samantha.
After a few hours, work had progressed as far as it could for the day, since some stuff needed to sit overnight before the shed could be finished. Everyone was quite hot and sweaty from all the work. Anno said "I'll get us something to drink." and headed back to the village.
While Anno was away, Janet said "Anno couldn't keep his eyes off of you, Sam. I think he likes you."
Sam answered "Well, he does seem like a nice guy, but..."
"Sam, I know. Everyone on the base except General Hammond knows about your feelings for Jack. But, face it. Nothing can ever come of it. You know that as well as I do. Of course, you can wait until you both are retired. But, Sam, no one is getting any younger. My advice: Give Anno a chance. You deserve it."
"Like you and Ameha, huh? You two do seem to be more than friends."
"What Ameha and I do is none of your business!" snapped Janet. "Just try what I suggested."
Changing the subject, Sam mentioned "Remember that incident some time back when the team and I had these strange and vivid dreams?"
"Yes." Janet responded.
"Well, I wasn't totally honest about my dream. What actually happened in it was that I was abducted by pirates, then I escaped and attempted to swim to shore. But I drowned." (chronicled in the story Samantha's Swim)
"Why didn't you mention this? It was very odd."
"Because I was afraid you might think I was crazy or something." answered Sam. "Besides, it got me wondering how fit I actually am."
"Sam, it was only a dream. Totally meaningless."
At about that point, Anno returned carrying containers of some kind of local fruit juice. It had a pleasant flavor and really hit the spot. Sam motioned Anno to sit next to her on the log. Anno complied and the two seemed to hit it off well, though Anno was a tad nervous. A little later, Anno returned to the village.
Janet and Sam then walked around, enjoying the island scenery. When they were on the beach, Janet said "It sure was hot working today, but there is one perfect way to cool off..." At that second, to Sam's astonishment, Janet removed her T-shirt and revealed a dark blue sports bra. Then, she undid her hair and took off her boots and fatigue pants, revealing matching briefs.
Seeing the expression on Sam's face, Janet explained "So? This still covers more than anything I wore to the beach in college. Besides, the clothes would be something of a drag. With that, Janet entered the ocean and was soon swimming.
Seeing Janet paddling around in the ocean, Sam decided to act on her secret plan. She yelled to Janet "I think you have the right idea. I'll join you."
Without removing a thing, Sam waded into the water. In a few steps, her boots were submerged and filling with water. She then continued into the ocean and the water was creeping up the fatigue pants. Soon, Sam was in water over her waist, which soaked her T-shirt and made it quite clingy. "Nice and warm," Sam thought, "much better than my previous surprise swim."
Janet, seeing what happened, realized that Sam knew about the beach all along and that this fully clothed swim of hers was to prove how good her swimming skills were, since she seemed to have lost some confidence in them after her dream.
Swimming over to Janet, Sam commented "You're right. The water is perfect."
Janet asked "Why go in with the boots and everything?" though she sort of knew the answer already.
"Look, I wind up in all sorts of unpredictable situations. I want to find out if I can handle swimming a distance in uniform. Maybe my survival and that of the team might depend on it someday. See that rock sticking out of the water in the distance? I'm swimming out to that." Sam responded.
Janet looked and saw the rock. For an unencumbered swimmer in good physical condition, it was a moderate workout, but no great task. However, Sam would be doing it in heavy combat boots and fatigue pants. Janet was concerned.
"Sam, I wouldn't do it. I'm afraid that you're just going to wear yourself out and maybe sink."
"I have to find out. We all have to be prepared for the unexpected!" Sam shot back.
"It's the dream, isn't it? Sam, you don't have to prove anything."
But Sam ignored Janet's pleas, displaying her usual stubborness. While sticking to her guns despite the odds has saved the lives of SG-1 and the world on more than a few occasions, this time, it might cause trouble. Still, Sam swam off towards the rock. Seeing no other course of action, Janet followed.
Sam was doing surprisingly well. She discovered early on that the conventional crawl stroke wasn't too effective, so she switched to a stroke where her arms did the bulk of the work, making things a little easier for her boot-laden feet. After a time, Sam made it to the rock.
"See?" said Sam. "Now I know I can make it." But, Janet could see that Sam had a harder time swimming than she claimed and appeared a bit tired.
Janet suggested "Let's rest a bit. You look a little tired."
"I'm fine. Now I'm heading back." With that, Sam pushed off from the rock with her feet and began the return trip. Janet swam besides her.
Sam was getting worn out, and by the time she was two-thirds of the way back, swimming became quite laborious. When Sam went under briefly, Janet decided action was needed and swam over to help Sam the rest of the way.
As this was happening, Anno was walking along the beach. He looked out and saw the two women. Instinctively, Anno ran into the ocean and swam out to them, covering the distance with impressive speed.
"What happened?" Anno asked as he arrived.
"It's Sam." Janet answered. "She went for a swim and overdid it. Tried to prove that someone could swim to that rock in with her boots on."
"Why would she do that?" Anno wondered.
"Because I want to be prepared in case I fall into the water on one of my missions." Sam responded.
Soon, the trio were in the shallows and Sam was catching her breath. The water was chest-deep on Sam and Anno, but almost up to the shoulders on Janet. "Sam, I think you've had enough swimming for today. Let's get out and rinse off the salt."
"How?" Sam asked. "I don't recall seeing any showers in the village."
"You'll see..." Janet replied.
The trio then headed inland and were soon at the lake and waterfall that Janet found out about on her first visit. Without wasting a second, they entered the lake and made their way for the waterfall.
After letting the natural shower rinse over her, Sam had a funny smile. "What's that about?" asked Janet.
"I was just thinking," Sam explained, "you know that bar across the street from the steakhouse? The one Jack always threatens to take Tea'lc to?"
"Yes. So?"
"They advertise 'wet T-shirt events' in the paper every now and then. Now, look at me, standing here in a wet T-shirt..."
Noticing that the contours of Sam's bra were visible underneath the clingy garment, Janet commented "But, I think you are wearing more than the women who do that at the bar." They both laughed.
After some more rinsing, they headed for the shore, Sam and Janet swimming some of the way underwater. Once out of the lake, Janet let herself dry in the breeze, while Sam headed towards the work site to check on things and get their backpacks. Anno returned to the village.
Satisfied that everything was okay, Sam got the backpacks. When she returned, she saw that Janet had put on her clothes. Taking her pack, she said "Let's go to the village."
Once at the village, Ameha met them and showed them to their huts. Janet had the same hut, close to Ameha's, that she had on her last visit. Sam got to stay in one of the newer visitor huts built since the mining agreement took effect.
A couple hours later, everyone gathered in the village for a dinner in honor of Janet and Sam's visit as well as the work done so far on the communications system. During the dinner, Anno asked Sam "Why did you swim with all that heavy stuff today?"
"Because, I wanted to see if I could do it in case I fell into the water during one of my missions. I go to a lot of strange places in my work where strange things happen." answered Sam.
"Still, wouldn't it make sense just to get rid of the stuff that was too heavy? It can't be more important than your life..."
"I see..." But Sam also thought on what Anno said. He did have a point. Uniforms were cheaper than guns and the other gear the SG teams lost with regularity. Then, Sam turned her thoughts to other matters - such as the tasty food and drink.
After a few hours of idle post-dinner conversation, everyone went back to their huts for some sleep. Janet removed her boots and got into her hammock, as Sam did in her hut. It was a cloudy night, but a nice soft breeze was blowing through the window.
Some time later, the restful night was interrupted. Janet heard a rapping on the side of the hut. Waking up, she investigated. It turned out to be Anno.
"What's wrong?" asked Janet.
"It's Sam." replied Anno. "I heard noise coming from her cabin. Thinking something got in, I checked. There was nothing else, just Sam acting like she was struggling. I'm afraid she might be ill."
"Anno, I appreciate your concern. But, she isn't ill. Sam is having a bad dream. You see, over the years, some of the bad people we fight - the Goau'ld - have hurt Sam and even tried to kill her."
"Terrible. That anyone would want to hurt someone like Sam..."
"Not only that, but there have been people who said they loved her, but only used her to get at some other goal." Janet intended this comment to also act as a warning to Anno.
"Thanks for the explanation." Anno said.
"I appreciate your concern for Sam. Now, let's get back to sleep. We have work in the morning."
Stopping at Sam's hut, Anno entered. Sam was still awake. "I heard some noise," Anno said, "and I thought you might be ill or something."
"No." Sam explained. "Just a bad dream. Happens every now and then."
"I know." Anno acknowledged. Then, he began to gently stroke Sam's back. At first, she didn't know what to make of it, but she soon figured he only wanted to comfort her, nothing more. Sam's eyelids got heavier and heavier. In less than a minute, she was fast asleep. Anno then left and went back to his hut.
The next morning, everyone got up and had breakfast. Then, Sam and Janet went back to work on the communications project. This time, Anno brought a few more men to help. With their assistance, the shed was finished rather quickly. Then, came the electrical work. While the islanders couldn't assist with the wiring, they were able to help move the heavy batteries from the hauler to inside the hut and under the table. A few hours later, everything was finished and all that had to be done was wait for the batteries to charge up. With a bright sunny day and the roof-mounted solar panels, it would take the rest of the day.
Much as they did on the previous day, Janet and Samantha walked towards the beach. Janet stripped off her shirt, fatigue pants, and boots to her undergarments - a dark blue sports bra and matching briefs which were higher cut on the legs than what she had on yesterday, which made her legs look a little longer. Janet then entered the ocean.
Sam, wearing the same ratty fatigue pants and boots she wore yesterday, waded right in without removing a thing.
"Sam," Janet said "you're not going to do that stupid stunt again, are you?"
"No way," replied Sam. I'm trying what Anno suggested at dinner last night. Swimming out a short distance, Sam glanced down at the sandy bottom seven feet below and said "This looks like a good spot." Then she took a deep breath and submerged.
Once underwater, Sam began to remove her boots. She was able to remove one before she had to surface for another breath.
"Ah, I see..." said Janet. "You're practicing how to quickly discard heavy items. That makes more sense than what you did yesterday."
"I know." replied Sam, who then dove back under to continue her exercise. After she got the other boot off, she went to the bottom and retrieved her footwear so she could practice and improve her time. Soon, after a few more tries, Sam could remove both boots on a single breath.
At about that time, Anno spotted the two women in the water and swam out to join them. "Hi." Anno said. "Sam, are you trying to that thing again today?"
"No." Sam answered. "I'm taking your advice - remove what is weighing you down. Seems to work."
"And you can swim well with your legs covered like that?" asked Anno.
"Well, I can, even though my pants do cause some drag." Then, Sam got to thinking. If she had to swim a really long distance, such drag would wear her out. But, she remembered something from her dream. How her fatigue pants could actually help her.
"Anno," Sam mentioned, "you gave me an idea. But I wish I could try it..."
Janet knew what Sam had in mind as well as why she was hesitant to try with Anno around. "Sam," Janet said, "Just do it. We won't mind. You've been through worse."
Sam realized that Janet was right. She suffered worse indignities the time she was captured by Hathor's forces as well as when that industrialist had her abducted. "What the heck..." Sam commented and went under.
In almost a single motion, Sam removed her boots, undid and slid out of her fatigue pants, revealing her black panties. Letting her boots sink, Sam grabbed the pants and surfaced. Once on the surface, Sam tightly knotted each leg and filled the garment with air. The improvised flotation device worked.
"Very clever." commented Anno. What he didn't comment on was that he was also impressed with how Sam looked. In addition to revealing her legs, her T-shirt was bobbing up a bit and revealed her trim midriff.
Sam, satisfied with her accomplishments, handed the flotation device to Anno and told him to take it ashore. Sam then dove down, retrieved her boots, and swam to shore. Once onshore, she set the boots and the flotation device on some rocks and then proceeded to remove her T-shirt - she figured "If Janet can do it..." - revealing her black bra. Then, Sam and Anno went back in the ocean to resume their swim.
As the trio were enjoying themselves in the ocean, Janet spotted a dark object in the distance - and instantly recognized it as Fishbringer, the whale-like creature she helped on her last visit. Seeing Fishbringer gave Janet an idea of a way to get back at Sam for the aggravation she caused yesterday. But she needed a little cooperation from Anno.
Paddling over to Anno, Janet whispered "Let's have some fun with Sam. Just talk to her and keep her occupied. I'll do the rest." Anno agreed and struck up a conversation with Sam while Janet swam to meet Fishbringer as it was approaching.
A minute or two later, Sam noticed the dark shape approaching Janet. "Janet!" she yelled. "Head for shore! Something's after you!"
Janet, pretending not to notice, yelled back "I don't see anything. Nothing to worry about." Fishbringer drew closer. As Sam was getting more frantic, Janet motioned with her hand underwater. Fishbringer came, grabbed Janet's hand in its lips and pulled her under.
Sam, thinking Janet was being attacked, swam to the rescue. As she approached, Fishbringer surfaced and Janet was all smiles. "Fooled you, didn't I?" she said.
"Don't scare me like that! I thought you were being eaten!" Sam yelled.
"As you can guess," Janet commented, "this is Fishbringer. He won't hurt you." Reluctantly, Janet swam closer and Fishbringer scanned her with his sonar, causing Sam to jump back with an almost embarassed expression on her face.
"Do you know what that felt like?" gasped Sam.
"Yes." replied Janet. "It's only the sonar resonating with your internal organs. That's all."
Once Sam got over her fear, she and Janet had fun playing with their friend. Anno kept a distance since he was too in awe of Fishbringer. The creature towed the women through the water, playfully lifted them out of the ocean and letting them dive off. It was almost like being in a show at Sea World. Sam was amazed that a creature so large could be so gentle with her and Janet.
Eventually, they got tired and swam back to shore. Fishbringer left to resume whatever it was that his species does.
Janet and Sam headed to the waterfall to rinse off. Sam made an impressive sight in her undergarments, which were of standard style as opposed to the more sports-style Janet wore and were therefore a tad more revealing. Janet, noticing this, commented "They're still less revealing that the bikini I had in college."
After rinsing off, Sam turned her attention to her knotted fatigue pants. "Damn it!" she exclaimed, "I can't untie this!" Calming down, she continued "Good thing these are the ratty work clothes." Then Janet and Sam went to their respective cabins to dry out and get dressed for the dinner.
Later that day, at the dinner, Janet saw how Sam solved the problem of the pants legs - she simply made cutoff shorts out of them. Coupled with her black T-shirt, she looked great and Anno approved.
Later, after dinner, Janet, Ameha, Anno, and Sam found a grassy spot to sit and watch the planet's two moons rise as night was falling. After a while, the moons were shining brightly on the water and a soft warm breeze was blowing, when Janet had an idea.
"How about a nice old-fashioned moonlight swim?" she said.
"You mean..." an astonished Sam asked. "I don't know..."
"Come on! You'll like it."
After explaining the concept to Ameha and Anno, everyone approved and headed for the beach. Soon the foursome was in the moonlit water, having a wonderful time. Sam and Janet decided to see how the bottom looked in the moonlight and did some simple freediving. It soon became apparent that, despite her smaller size, Janet was the more graceful swimmer of the two. However, both were astounded at how long they could hold their breath. The combination of lungs accustomed to Colorado and the clean sea-level air of the beach were the reasons.
As with all good things, this nocturnal swim came to an end and everybody turned in for the night.
After a peaceful sleep, Janet and Sam got dressed (Sam changed into her "good" outfit that she wore when she went through the gate) and after breakfast, they as well as a group from the village went to the communications facility.
"Now to see if this works..." said Sam as she turned on the system. A set of lights indicated all was well. Next, Janet activated the gate.
Meanwhile, back on Earth, a man behind a computer stated "Offworld activation." As the sirens went off, he continued "Signal only."
"Put it through." ordered General Hammond.
Sam's voice came out the speaker and said "General, the system works. We will be returning soon."
At that moment, another signal - the GDO Sam had - was detected and the iris was opened.
"Good job." commented Hammond. "See you in a few minutes."
Back on the planet, the hauler was sent through first and Sam and Janet said their goodbyes. "Thank you for your help." said Ameha.
"It was a pleasure to help and thanks for the fun we had." Then Janet and Ameha joined in a warm embrace and kiss.
Sam turned to Anno and said "It was great being here and you were so wonderful. I can't wait to visit again!"
Anno responded "I hope you return soon." Sam and Anno then kissed.
The two women then walked through the stargate, each wondering when their next trip to this wonderful planet would be.
Things weren't totally quiet though. General Hammond had scheduled a meeting with Dr. Frasier (who was essentially Earth's representative when it came to dealing with the islanders) to discuss how to reward the islanders for living up to the mining agreement.
