It was early in 1998 and a prominent Los Angeles area children's charity had convened a board meeting. The topic was coming up with a new fundraising activity. True, $500-a-plate dinners were quite successful, but they wanted to find something that would be more accessible to the general public. One of the board, a well-known convention organizer came up with the idea of having some celebrities do a personal appearance and selling pictures for autographing for $10 each. The idea was accepted and the groundwork began. First, celebrities had to be picked. Fortunately, one of the board had connections at Paramount Studios and was able to arrange for the female anchors of "Entertainment Tonight" (a popular entertainment news program) to do a personal appearance. Then came the matter of choosing a location. After unsuccessful attempts to book auditorium and shopping malls, another member of the board came forward with the solution. He owned a country club in the area and offered it as the site of the event. Since the course was being renovated that summer, that set the date for the event.
The appointed date came and it was the hottest Saturday of the summer of 1998. Three of the "Entertainment Tonight" women (Mary Hart, Julie Moran, and Jann Carl) arrived at the club. A fourth (Lisa Canning) was off on a last minute assignment for the show doing an interview in Vancouver. Mary was wearing a bright red two-piece business suit with matching pumps. Jann was dressed in a similar outfit, but it was off-white in color. Julie had on a blue sleeveless dress with a slight scoop neck (similar to the outfit she wore on the cover of "Walking" magazine. Her dress was just a little above the knee, while her friends had skirts that were just a little longer than mid-thigh.
Upon arriving, the club owner escorted them inside to the dining room, the site of the event. As they were setting up, Jann said "Thank God this place is air conditioned."
The crowd soon poured in and the event was going extremely smooth. Then, just past the halfway point, it happened. There was a loud thunk and the ladies wondered what it was. The mystery was solved in minutes when the air became hot and stuffy. The club owner appeared and explained "The air conditioner just died. I'm afraid we're going to have to cancel."
Mary exclaimed "What about the charity? They're depending on us and we're not going to let them down! Why can't we move the event outside? True it will be hot, but it won't be stuffy."
Seeing the logic in Mary's suggestion, the event was quickly moved to club's recreation area which was shaded from the sun by the main clubhouse. The event then continued with the club owner bringing out pitchers of iced tea and ice water for the ladies to drink in an attempt to cope with the heat.
Later, after the last autograph seeker left, the club owner said "Thanks for making this event a success! Couldn't have done it without you! Unfortunately, we ran out of ice water and ice tea, so if you would like to cool off before the drive home, the only thing I can do is offer you the use of our swimming pool."
Jann said "Why didn't you make this offer before we came here? Then we would have known to bring our swimsuits. But we didn't! And if you suggest that we go skinny-dipping, I take this table and ram it up..."
"Calm down." the club owner asked. "I was only offering the use of the pool, since you all seem fairly wilted from the heat and I didn't want any of you to pass out from it on the way home."
"Thanks for your concern," responded Mary, "but we aren't wearing swimsuits."
"True," answered the club owner, "but I think the heat has turned them into sweat-suits already."
Mary stood up to make another comment, but she noticed that the back of her outfit was sticking to the chair. Julie and Jann also noticed that the backs of their outfits were practically soaked in sweat. Figuring that the pool water would be less damaging than perspiration and also since the large inground pool looked inviting, Jann said "Well, the pool does look good... Let's go!"
The club owner quickly cautioned them to keep their shoes on since the pavement between the table and the pool was very hot. The ladies then ran to the pool and did not stop when they came to the edge, and jumped in. The cool water felt very refreshing as it instantly soaked through their clothes. Coming to the surface, the ladies noticed that they actually enjoyed being in the pool like this. True, it was relief from the heat, but each felt other pleasant feelings for some strange reason. It was like a great swim party as they swam, paddled around, floated, dove under, ducked someone else under. Everyone was having a great time, but Julie was a little irritated. While Jann and Mary's skirts only rode up to their hips at most, Julie's dress (since it had no well-defined waist) frequently rode up to her waist and she would have to keep pushing it down. Finally, she had enough, swam to the pool ladder, and climbed out.
Julie made her way to the diving board, got on, and, instead of making a dive, simply jumped in feet-first with her arms pointed straight up. When she hit the water, it worked as predicted. Julie's dress went up past her waist, past her armpits, and finally over her raised arms and off of her completely, leaving her in her dark blue sports bra and brief set. Surfacing, Julie realized that her undergarments were far more conservative and less revealing than any bikini she ever wore to a public beach. "Why didn't I think of this sooner?" she thought. Julie's friends, however, were not that adventurous and kept their outfits on.
The ladies continued to frolic in the pool until, as the air got cooler, they decided it was time to get out. Julie dove down, retrieved her dress, slipped it back on, and exited the pool with her friends.
"That was fun!" Mary mentioned, "but we have to find some way to rinse off all this chlorine..."
Jann picked up, turned on a garden hose, and yelled as she hit Mary with a stream of water, "Like this?" Soon, the ladies were playfully spraying each other with the hose and got thoroughly rinsed off in the process.
After the hosing, they found the towels the club owner left for them and towelled off. Then they found some lawn chaises in a shady spot and sat on them as the now-cool breeze finished drying them off.
Julie asked "Could you imagine if our husbands could have seen us today?"
Jann responded "Well, for one thing, I'd have to cancel any plans I had for tonight." There was laughter at that from all three of them at that remark.
Julie added "We have to do this again sometime. I have an idea. Why don't I have a surprise swim party next Friday and we can invite our husbands and let them in on the fun!"
Mary pointed out "How can you have a surprise party if you tell us about it?"
Julie answered "The party isn't a surprise, but the swimming is..."
Then it was time to leave and the trio headed for their homes. As each one was driving away, they eagerly anticipated their next wet adventure.
